House fire in Smith

That house fire pictured in the Nov. 9 Leader wasn’t the only structure fire in the area that week. This one, in Smith, happened a few days earlier, on Oct. 31, but we didn’t hear about it until about a week later. According to fire chief Alex Pavcek, it happened in one unit of a ‘six-plex’ building. The fire was contained to the first unit, he said, but with some fire damage in other units, along with smoke and water damage. It is not considered suspicious. Fire crews from five different halls responded, including two from out of the region – Baptiste Lake and Town of Athabasca – the latter two because the chief specifically asked for the support, given the size of the structure. “And not wanting to take all my firefighters from the Slave Lake area,” says Pavcek.
