After two months of practice and preparation, young badminton players at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic School Huskies wrapped up their season with a two-day tournament held at the school on May 29 and 30.
“We have been practicing for two months,” says Nathan Rogers, the badminton coach of Huskies. “Everyone has put their best effort. It was a great weekend.”
Rogers says 12 students from Grades 4, 5, and 6 participated in the tournament.
The tournament featured players competing in singles and doubles matches over two days.
On the first day, students competed in singles matches. The second day focused on doubles competition, giving players the opportunity to work together with a partner and show their teamwork on the court.
According to Rogers, the athletes played a total of 66 games throughout the tournament.
Each player was guaranteed at least three games in both the singles and doubles categories. After the preliminary rounds, the top four players in each category advanced to the playoffs.
The playoffs included semifinal matches followed by bronze and gold medal games. Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded immediately after the final matches concluded.
Rogers says that the tournament was a great opportunity for students to apply the skills they developed throughout the season while enjoying friendly competition with their classmates.
“Everyone has put in their best effort,” he says.
Two of Grade 6 students, Mark Hernandez and Daronne Ubales both won gold medals in singles and doubles categories.
Kody Cardinal took home a bronze in singles, and a silver in doubles. Amiel Destajo won silver in both singles and doubles.
Rogers also thanked the parents who supported the players throughout the season and during the tournament.
“Thank you to everyone who came out to support our students this weekend,” says Rogers.
Rogers says that the school is looking forward to making this tournament an annual tradition.
