Icedogs have no answer for High Prairie – lose fourth straight

After starting the season with four straight wins, the Slave Lake Icedogs have now lost four in a row. All four were at the hands of the team from down the road – the High Prairie Red Wings.

The good news in that scenario – if you can call a loss good news – is that the most recent of those games was close. That was a 7 – 6 loss on Saturday in High Prairie. It followed a 10 – 4 embarrassment at the hands of the Red Wings on Friday night in Slave Lake.

Friday’s game started well for the Icedogs. They had the early edge in play, but it was High Prairie that struck first, with speedy winger Jacob Boucher putting in a rebound. Shaye Sommerfeld of Slave Lake responded, scoring from some distance off the rush.

The game was close for a couple of periods; but High Prairie had all the answers in the third, scoring four times unanswered.

Shots were 44 – 35 for the Red Wings. Vishaun Laliberte started the game in net for Slave Lake; Skyler Di Lallo finished it off.

Slave Lake’s ‘Big Three’ again did most of the scoring. Sommerfeld, Carson Lux and Bryce Young. Team captain Ethan Stuckless had a couple of assists, but he also took four penalties in the third period.

Saturday’s game in High Prairie was close all the way. It was 2 – 2 after one period, with Icedogs’ goals by Young and Sommerfeld. After 40 minutes it was a 5 – 5 game. Slave Lake led 6 – 5 in the third and outshot HP 10 – 4, but gave up a couple to Jacob Boucher.

This Friday the Icedogs play in Fox Creek. The Ice Kings return the favour by playing here Saturday evening. Enoch and Fox Creek did not play this past weekend.

Rumour has it there is a new Icedogs coach on the scene, just in from Ontario. (We’ll get back to you on that next week.)

Action from Friday night’s GMHL West game between High Prairie (in red) and the Slave Lake Icedogs. Slave Lake goalie Vishaun Laliberte kept the puck out on this occasion, but High Prairie won the game 10 – 4.
