Slave Lake’s Junior ‘A’ team started its sophomore season with a bang, clobbering the rookie Fox Creek Ice Kings in a pair of games. The ‘Dogs skated to an 8 – 1 win in Fox Creek Friday night and followed it up with a 9 -1 victory in their home-opener Saturday.
As expected (and more or less predicted by team advisor Kevin McClelland), the quartet of 21-year-olds who played together previously with the Red Lake Miners, are racking up the points. Forwards Shaye Sommerfeld, Ethan Stuckless and Bryce Young, along with defenceman Carson Lux, accounted for 14 of the 17 goals the Icedogs scored in the two games. In goal, Skyler DiLallo faced 24 shots in Friday’s game; Vishaun Laliberte got the start on Saturday and stopped all but one of the 25 shots he faced. The Icedogs put over 60 shots on net in both games.
Thanks to the COVID-influenced schedule, the same two teams will face each other a few more times, before taking a two-week break for quarantine purposes. After that, the Icedogs do the same sort of series of games with one of the other teams. It’s looking like the stiffest competition this season will come from the Northern Alberta Tomahawks. They disposed of High Prairie fairly easily in two games this weekend.
