Icedogs short of players, lose a couple of games

The Slave Lake Icedogs have a numbers problem at the moment, and it isn’t helping. They had what under the circumstances was probably an okay result in Edson on Friday, but got shut out and blown out at home on Saturday.

How bad was it? How about getting outshot 60 – 10?

But no wonder they couldn’t score, with three of their top offensive performers not playing in Saturday’s game. The score was 10 – 0 for the Tomahawks, and probably could have been worse.

“We have a hard time playing 60 minutes,” says coach Andy Meth.

On Friday, the Icedogs at least scored a few, in a 9 – 4 loss. Leading scorer Kaden Cardinal did not make the game, but Nolan Janvier, Sacha Munro and Dominic Mckay showed up and scored and the ‘Dogs actually led 3 – 1 in the first period. But Edson more or less romped after that. Janvier’s second unassisted goal of the game in the second was as good as it got for Slave Lake the rest of the way.

The Icedogs host the Edson Eagles this Friday night. On Saturday they play in Gibbons against the winless Pioneers.

And another thing…
The Icedogs’ win over Fox Creek did not make it into our report in the Nov. 16 Leader. It was a 10 – 2 victory on home ice.

The ‘Dogs outshot the Ice Kings 42 – 18, getting 37 of those shots in the first two periods. Leading 9 – 2 after two periods, they slacked off in the third, but still scored the only goal. Fox Creek had its best period – shots-wise at least, in the third, but the first period was their best. It ended 4 – 2 in favour of the home team.

Kaden Cardinal continued his hot streak for the Icedogs, with four goals and four assists. Patrick Bourque chipped in three goals and two assists. Sacha Munro was good for four points as well, earning him third star of the game honours.

Philip Lidh went the distance in goal, stopping 16 shots.

Slave Lake Icedogs goalie Philip Lidh makes a save by throwing himself on the puck in the Nov. 19 game in Slave Lake vs. the Northern Alberta Tomahawks.
