Icedogs waiting for restrictions to be lifted

Slave Lake’s junior hockey team is in limbo like every other team in town. But a few things are happening behind the scenes, according to team owner Lauren Barr.

Player movement is the big one.

“We traded Bryce Young to the Northumberland Stars of the GMHL,” says Barr. That’s one of the Ontario teams.

Ethan Stuckless, who briefly served as the Icedogs’ captain, is also out of the picture. He’s taken a job, Barr says, “as he is committed to Portage College next year and wants to earn money.”

Added to the Icedogs’ roster is Rocky Baptiste. Other new faces will follow.

“We are in the process of signing a number of new players,” Barr says.

Other news: The Icedogs are getting a dressing room makeover, thanks to some sponsorship. Barr says Rytrue of Slave Lake has the contract and has also donated $3,000 to the project. A fellow from Ontario named John Playfair has contributed another $10,000.

New coach and GM Gregg Kennedy “has brought a lot of experience to the role and the team has benefitted,” Barr says.
