There will be a national lifeguard course offered in August. A date is to be released soon.

The roots of empathy program run by Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) is recruiting babies born in next June, July and August. There needs to be a minimum of six families for the program, said Comeau. The group only has two families lined up. Interested families can call 780-849-8003.

FCSS grants will open the end of August. Programs such as family fun night and roots of empathy start back up in September, said Comeau.

211 Alberta
Mel Kuprowsky from 211 Alberta gave everyone at the meeting a review of what 211 is. 211 Alberta is a phone line where people can call and get connected to a program in the city or town they’re located in.

There are currently 21 agencies in Slave Lake that are registered with 211 Alberta, said Kuprowsky.

“We’re slowly looking into other agencies joining,” he said.

Children’s Resource Council
Play and Learn is Tuesdays at Schurter Park. At the recent one (June 24), 15 families came to the program, said Christine Boisvert, child support specialist and parent educator for Children’s Resource Council (CRC). Baby and Me is Wednesdays at 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Legacy Centre. A new program called ‘Circle of Security’ was shared by Boisvert. It is a parenting program. It will launch in sometime in September. A poster is being created and will be released before it begins in September.

Outdoor Story Time is Mondays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. for June, July and August at Hilda Eben Park. There will be a story and craft. This is weather permitting, said Susan Al-Mais, children’s coordinator for the library.

Yoga Outdoors is Fridays at the back of the library for July and August. It starts at 10:30 a.m. and finishes at 11 a.m. Each class is weather permitting. “Join this playfully active story time full of movement and gentle stretching,” says the poster. It is for families and children ages 4-8 years. Children must be with an adult and have the liability form signed before the class. To register, call the library at 780-849-5250.

“The turnout is pretty low in the summer,” said Trina Napier of Recovery Alberta.

New rehabilitation program
A new rehabilitation program called ‘Breaking Cycles of Defeat and Finding Hope in Brokeness,’ is launching September in Slave Lake, said Bruce Clark, a spokesperson for Rising Above Ministries (RAM). RAM is a Christian organization that helps people with healing, hope and a fresh start. They have secured a location in Slave Lake as of June 24, said Clark at the meeting.

“It’s such an exciting opportunity for the community,” said Engen.

Nikki from Northern Haven Support Society (NHSS) talked about the Ladies Introduction to Fishing on July 2, hosted by the group. It was hosted indoors for this one, which meant no one needed a fishing license.

In other news, Nikki shared that NHSS is starting programs back up in September.

Vanderwell Heritage Place
The calendar for July was released and will be available to view on the Vanderwell Heritage Place Facebook page soon. All events are for seniors in the community, not just residents at the lodge.

Residents of Vanderwell will be participating in this years Riverboat Daze parade. It is July 4 at 6 p.m. This years theme is ‘Under the Sea’. Kali Locken of Lesser Slave Lake Regional Housing Authority is helping with the parade float. There will a new shuttle bus in town sometime in the next month, said Locken. The bus is accessible for everyone in the community. It is not just for seniors. A ribbon cutting barbecue is being planned for the shuttle bus. A date is still being decided.
