Ken Vanderwell honoured

In late February, Ken Vanderwell of Slave Lake was one of a dozen Albertans to receive the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal from the Minister of Forestry, Parks and Tourism, Jason Loewen. The ceremony was at Government House in Edmonton.
“It was very nice,” Vanderwell, who is president and general manager of Vanderwell Contractors, the sawmill business located in the Mitsue Industrial Park in the M.D. of Lesser Slave River, told The Leader last week. He also passed on what he’d mentioned to his mother, Karen Vanderwell, who accompanied him to the ceremony: something along the lines that in accepting recognition for his services to the forest industry, he was “standing on the shoulders” of those who came before him, such as his grandfather and father (Barney Vandwerwell and Bob Vanderwell) who preceded him in the family business.
