Letters to the Editor – from Martin Abbott

How about reporting other causes of misery?

To the Editor:

For the past while, the front page of the Lakeside Leader has included stories regarding COVID. These usually involve the report of unnamed people in neighbouring Municipal Districts dying and unidentified people in MD #124 contacting the coronavirus.

Correct me if I am wrong, but to date there have been no deaths in MD #124 directly attributed to COVID. Although there has been reports of people getting infected within the MD, it has never been specified where in the MD these infections occurred.

It just seems unusual that although people in Slave Lake have died from various causes during the same period, it never becomes front page news. It is almost like the Lakeside Leader has joined all the other media in only focusing on the coronavirus.

Did people stop dying from cancer? Alcohol abuse? Impaired driving? Automobile accidents? Etc. Etc.

The majority of media seems to want the public to think that as many stories report on people suffering and dying from COVID, but very few report on those suffering from delayed surgeries, spousal abuse, lost income and so on.

I am a faithful reader and fully support our local paper, but I would greatly appreciate it if you could do a story regarding all the other causes of misery due to the health restrictions from this pandemic.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
