Local outdoorsman offers supplies and knowledge

Mike Johnson was back at the Slave Lake Farmers’ Market on May 22. Johnson is the owner of Uncle Mike’s Outdoors, says the market gives him a chance to connect directly with shoppers while sharing products tied to his love of the outdoors.

The Smith-based business offers a range of outdoor items, with Johnson saying customer service remains at the centre of what he does. He previously operated in the Grande Prairie area and returned to selling outdoor gear after moving to Smith a few years ago.

He says the decision to get back into the business came naturally because of his long-standing interest in the outdoors and in helping people find what they need.

Johnson says Uncle Mike’s Outdoors is 100 per cent Canadian owned and operated. He says most of the products he carries are Canadian and often support a broader cause, something he believes matters to customers who want their purchases to have a local or social connection. He also helps with Alberta Junior Forest Wardens, reflecting the community-minded approach he brings to the business.

For Johnson, markets are about more than sales. He says they create face-to-face conversations with customers and serve as an important reminder for people to support local businesses. Events such as the Slave Lake market let vendors explain their products, answer questions and build relationships that are harder to create online alone. His products are available at markets and through his online store.

As farmers’ markets continue to draw shoppers looking for local goods and personal service, Johnson says he is glad to be part of that experience. For him, the business is not just about outdoor equipment but about connecting with people who share an interest in Canadian products, community involvement and the outdoors.
