Man arrested in the strange case of a body found in a wildfire near Widewater

On September 18, 2020, RCMP charged a 24-year-old man for the death of Darren Dawson (30).

Dawson’s body was found by firefighters dealing with a wildfire south of Widewater on May 31, 2019.

RCMP charged the suspect with second degree murder, causing an indignity to a body, and arson. The suspect is in Fort Saskatchewan Correction Centre for unrelated offences.

Dawson’s body was discovered at a time when wildfires in the area were making people tense, as reported in the May 29, 2019 Leader.

A June 12 Leader article reported the RCMP declaring Dawson’s death a homicide.

The accused’s next court date is Oct. 28 in Slave Lake.

His first appearance was to be Sept. 23. He was represented by a lawyer, who asked for the case to be put over for four weeks.
