Man ordered to stand trial for Smith woman’s death

An elderly man who was charged in the death of a Smith woman has been ordered to stand trial.

On December 27, 2022 shortly after midnight, a Smith woman was struck by vehicle, says an RCMP news release at the time. Police found her unresponsive in the ditch and tried to save her, but she was declared dead on the scene.

The suspect was 83 years old man from Smith.

From March 5 to 8, 2024, the accused had a preliminary inquiry in Slave Lake Court of Justice for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and impaired driving causing death.

A publication ban applies to all evidence heard at the hearing. This does not apply to the result.

Based on the evidence, the justice found that the man should stand trial.

This trial will be a judge alone trial in Court of King’s Bench. The accused’s next court date is April 22 in Peace River Court of King’s Bench for arraignment to set a trial date.
