Mary Brown (sitting, second from right) of Slave Lake recently received the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Award at a ceremony in Edmonton on Jan. 29. Brown is or has been a member of many organizations, including the Slave Lake Native Friendship Centre seniors’ group, as well as a Friendship Centre board member, Metis Region 5 member, and IAAC (Institution for the Advancement of Aboriginal Women) member, along with many other volunteer efforts. “Mary continues to help where she can, and when she can,” says Darlene Walker, the Friendship Centre’s seniors outreach coordinator. “I’d like to to acknowledge publicly one of Mary Brown’s many accomplishments.” “It’s quite an honour,” Brown told The Leader.
