The new leadership team for the Slave Lake Icedogs is in place. Leadership on the ice, that is. We’ve already introduced you to head coach Joey McEwan and mentioned his assistants Tyson Price and Travis Wakefield. McEwan has now chosen his captain and assistant captains.
Wearing the ‘C’ this season will be Ethan Stuckless. He’s one of four ex Red Lake Miners who would have been playing for Portage College this season if not for COVID playing havoc with that opportunity. He’s a native of Flin Flon, Manitoba, plays left wing and says he’s enjoying being here so far.
“We’re busy every day,” he says. “We’re eager to get things started.”
Gerik Giroux is the local guy in the leadership team. He’s from the Swan River First Nation, but born in Slave Lake. He’ll be one of the three assistant captains. Giroux plays right wing and is starting his second season with the Icedogs.
“We’re coming together,” he says. “We’re excited to play hockey.”
Carson Lux is one of a pair of Drayton Valley products on the team and will also don the ‘A’ for the ‘Dogs this season.
“It’s been good,” he says of the training camp so far. “Kevin McClelland (ex of the Oilers) and Lauren Barr did a great job recruiting.” Lux plays defence.
Shaye Sommerfeld is the third assistant captain. He’s also from Drayton Valley and last year played in Ontario with the Red Lake Miners alongside Stuckless and Sommerfeld. He’s a centreman.
“I like it a lot, actually,” he says, of the experience in Slave Lake so far. “Having Kevin McClelland is huge.”
McEwan says he’s looking forward to good things from the four captains, and indeed the whole team.
“All those kids, they’ve impressed me with how mature they are,” he says.
The Icedogs are expecting to begin their regular season on Oct. 16, but that hadn’t been officially confirmed by press time.
