Métis Week

Last week was Métis Week, and Nov. 16 was Louis Riel Day. It was commemorated with a flag-raising ceremony at the Slave Lake town office, in conditions that were a bit short of ideal. But that didn’t prevent long-time Region 5 president Elmer Gullion (third from left) from attending from Wabasca, along with several others.
Region 5 vice president Hilda Lambert, right, read a brief history of Riel, while town employee Connor Lacombe ran up the Métis flag. Also attending were Slave Lake Native Friendship Centre executive director Barb Courtorielle and Friendship Centre outreach worker Darlene Walker. Also present at the ceremony was Diane Gladue, vice president Métis Local 90 in Wabasca, and representatives from Bigstone Cree Nation.
