Slave Lake’s top minor hockey team was idle this past weekend, but there was plenty of other action. The Midget 2 Thunder, for example, played twice. On Saturday in Gibbons they fought for a 6 – 6 tie with the CNN team; on Sunday they lost 11 – 3 to Hinton.
In Saturday’s game Kayle Dierker came up huge with a four-goal performance. Also scoring for Slave Lake were Lou Davis Giroux and Joshua Beaver. Jack Albrecht made 24 saves for the Thunder.
In Sunday’s game in Hinton the Thunder had a rough second period, allowing eight goals. They bounced back a bit in the third with all three of their goals, scored by Beaver (2) and Malakie Muskwa.
The Slave Lake Bantam 1 Thunder were in Camrose on Saturday and lost 5 – 3, which probably wasn’t a bad result, considering they were outshot 41 – 20. Mitchell Laboucan got two of the Slave Lake goals and Cohen Foster got the other. Jackson Morissette was the busy goalie in the loss.
The Thunder also played in Tofield on Sunday, but the results were not posted by press time.
The Bantam 2 Thunder lost 6 – 2 to Barrhead on Sunday. Landon Horsley and Levi Ridley got the Slave Lake goals. Thomas Horsley faced 37 shots in the Slave Lake net.
Moving along to the Pee Wee level of hockey, the Tier I Thunder faltered a bit, losing 4 – 3 to Edson on Saturday. Sunday they bounced back with a 4 – 3 win over Leduc.
The Thunder had clobbered Edson in their first game; they more than doubled the Edson shots in this one, but had trouble scoring. Liam Dierker, Damian Hill and Kaleb Van Hoek scored for Slave Lake. Salah Baalbaki saw 18 shots in net in the loss.
The scenario was similar against Leduc on Sunday – more than twice as many shots on goal, but this time the one-goal victory. They did it the hard way too – scoring four straight after going down 3 – 0. Getting the Slave Lake goals were Van Hoek with three and Hill.
The Pee Wee 2 Thunder, meanwhile, beat Whitecourt 7 – 1 on Friday night. Gerrious Giroux and Jagger Green each scored twice in the win. Tyrayn Ferguson, Ethan Fudge and Katelyn Ritchie also scored. Conal Ferguson had a lively night in net, stopping all but one of 30 shots.
The Atom 1 Thunder battled Whitecourt on Sunday and came away with a 4 – 3 victory. It took a goal with 21 seconds left in the game to get the win.
Slave Lake had to climb back into this one, after going down 3 – 0 to the visitors. The comeback started at 14:56 of the second period, when Hudsyn Pearson scored. Jonas Lillo made it a 3 – 2 game a couple of minutes later and that’s how it stayed until late in the third, when Lillo got his second of the game. The seconds were ticking off the clock when Josh Barore got the winner. Grady Beauchamp got the win in net for Slave Lake.
Otherwise, there was a Novice tournament in town on Saturday. We’ll report those results when we get them.
