Negotiations progressing

Strikes are in the air. There is bad news on the Canada Post front (see Page 1), but maybe good news on the teachers front.

On September 24, the Alberta Teacher Association (ATA) announced a tentative agreement between the ATA and Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA).

Teachers were to vote on this between Saturday, Sept. 27 at 8 a.m. and Monday, Sept. 29 at 5 p.m. As the vote ends after this paper went to print, the vote results can’t be included.

The ATA news release says the tentative agreement “addresses salary and classroom complexity issues, which includes a commitment to hire an additional 3,000 teachers over the next three years.”

If all goes well, there will not be a teachers strike at the beginning of October. No one wants a strike, but students deserve a strong education, which requires teachers who are able to do their jobs and want to stay in the profession.
