The M.D. of Opportunity is in the midst of trying to figure out a policy to allow for scholarships for professions, which are needed its communities. The idea was sparked by a medical student from Calling Lake in early July.

At the July 23 meeting, council had a second application from a medical student.

Chyna Steele is from Wabasca and is in her final year of medical school in Ontario. She submitted a community grant application for $15,000.

“Wabasca has always been my home,” she said in her application letter, “and my journey into medicine was shaped by the people experiences, and stories I carry from our community … My long-term goal is to work as a family doctor in Wabasca.”

Later in the letter, she says, “This bursary would provide much-needed financial support during a time when I am dedicating all of my time and energy to medical school. It would ease the burden of costs, such as tuition and living expenses, allowing me to focus on becoming the best possible doctor for my community.”

The letter was accepted as information.

Councillor Leo Alook asked at the July 23 meeting when the scholarship policy would be back before council. The answer was the next policy meeting, but a date hadn’t been set yet.
