Two staff members at schools in Slave Lake have recently been slammed by the teachers’ union for what it deems inappropriate behaviour. Fair enough – unions have rules and disciplinary procedures. If you break them, punishment follows.
But in these two cases, the so-called ‘crimes’ were pretty minor. And yet the ATA disciplinary panel saw fit to release its findings to the press. In both cases it resulted in big headlines and embarrassing and possibly career-damaging stories in the Edmonton papers. It seems like overkill. In our opinion, except perhaps in egregious cases of abuse of authority, the union should keep that stuff in-house.
