Province announces changes to AHS

Leader staff

On Nov. 17, the government of Alberta announced a change to Alberta Health Services leadership.

“Right now, the province’s health-care system is unable to meet growing demand,” says the news release.

In response, the government appointed Dr. John Cowell as a full-time official administrator, to replace the part-time AHS board of directors. He will report directly to premier Danielle Smith and Jason Copping, minister of health. He will work with Mauro Chies, the interim AHS CEO, to address four goals: improve EMS response times, decrease ER wait times, reduce wait times for surgeries, and develop long-term reforms through consultations with front-line workers.
