Several members of the Roland Michener Rams’ wrestling team have qualified for two major tournaments this winter. They accomplished the feat at a Dec. 8 qualifying event in Grande Prairie.
Head coach Ian Doetzel says to qualify for the Arctic Winter Games or the Alberta Winter Games, “you had to be first in the tournament.” Accomplishing that for the Alberta Games in Fort McMurray were Rams Courtney Reason, Karl Koester, Corbin McCann, Ty Kubel, Ethan Drake, Charlotte Stockholm and Reuben Burton.
Second-place finishers didn’t qualify, but Doetzel says they still have a chance of attending as alternates. On that list are Robbie Rowe, Zane Lightening, Jack Carson, Myles Allarie, Kat Holden, Sierra Delaney, Oscar Horsman and Erik Kebel. The Alberta Winter Games will be held in mid-February.
Qualifying for the 2018 Arctic Winter Game was even tougher.
Doetzel says, “Courtney Reason was the sole qualifier.”
Making the grade as alternates for Team Alberta North were Rowe, Koester, Burton, McCann, Zoe Lightening and Zane Lightening. The Arctic Winter Games are in March in Hay River, NT.
In all, 27 Roland Michener wrestlers took part in the tryouts.
