Report on curling: The race to the finish

For the Lakeside Leader

The standings for the Slave Lake Curling Centre Men’s League changed very little this week. With just five weeks remaining in regular season play, there are still three teams within two wins of the top four teams.
The crews of Snap On, Whitecap Sheetheads and SI & SWG will have to sweep pretty hard if they plan on catching the league leaders. Although all 12 teams qualify for the playoffs, the top four point-producers get a well-earned bye into the second round of the Club Championship tournament.
The feature game this week was the fifth annual Rubber Match Cup, a yearly one-game contest with the big winnings being that of bragging rights. In what has turned out to be quite the rivalry, team Snap On, led by the father and son duo of Gord and Scott Iverson, took on the underdog Sticks & Stones, sporting their own father and son combo of Tyson and Bailey Nehring.
In a battle that went back and forth all night, it was Snap On eventually coming out on top 7 – 6 for their fourth Rubber Match Cup in a row.
