On January 11 the Roland Michener School Rams wrestling team headed out to Grande Prairie to compete in a large Junior-Sr. High tournament.
It was a great tournament with several teams from BC and a large team from the Northwest Territories as well as several teams from throughout Alberta.
The competition was stiff. Slave Lake sent 16 wrestlers – eight junior high and eight senior high with three girls and 15 boys.
In the morning it was all the junior high wrestlers. Kaillyn Sherrard wrestled her way to a silver medal. Emma Bessie got the gold medal as she beat out girls from BC, Northwest Territories, and two from Alberta. She wrestled very well and is quickly improving her skills.
Next step was Oscar Horsman, who wrestled well and hard and is refining his skills as he walked home with a silver medal.
Aydyn Gilpin wrestled in his first tournament and got a bronze medal.
Right around lunchtime it was the senior highs who stepped up and began their wrestling tournament. Rookie Zach Buchanan suffered an injury but placed third overall.
Keith Reason got a silver medal. Karl Koester got the only gold medal for the senior highs.
Zane Lightening wrestled with some upsets in his matches but came around to get a bronze medal.
Great job everyone. Next is the massive tournament in Edmonton at the Butterdome on February 2.
