Scuffle by the mall: gun was involved, but it wasn’t fired

Leader staff

Reports of a gun being used by one of the parties in a fight in Slave Lake may have been exaggerated, or at least misunderstood. The Leader actually received word that somebody had been shot. That did not happen.

Police report they did find a firearm on one of the parties, but that it was not fired in the altercation. The allegation, says Slave Lake RCMP Staff Sgt. John Spaans, is the culprit used the gun to hit the guy he was fighting with. Injuries were minor.

Whoever reported the fight – near the No Frills store on the night of Sept. 26 – told police one of the combatants had a gun.

When police arrived at the scene, they found one of the males walking away and arrested him. He told the RCMP he had a firearm. They also found ammunition on him.

The other party in the altercation was found near the 7-Eleven store. EMS treated him for injuries, presumably suffered in the fight. Police then arrested him for unrelated charges, arising from the Desmarais RCMP detachment.

The Slave Lake RCMP continues to investigate this matter including identifying the individual(s).
