Members of two Slave Lake area swim clubs competed at meets in Beaverlodge and Fairview on recent weekends, with a parade of impressive results. On top of that, three members of the Slave Lake Sharks qualified for the Zone 8 team competing at the Alberta Summer Games in Grande Prairie in July.

At Beaverlodge on June 2, 12 members of the Sharks competed – Grace Auger, Ethan Baril, Collin Becker, Kaden Becker, Colby Cyr, Eleanor Friesen, Taylor Friesen, Karl Koester, Soleil Pugliese, Dawson Taylor, Gryffin Taylor, Alexis Wheeler. They set 29 personal best times in 48 races. Winning aggregate medals were Dawson Taylor – Bronze, Grace Auger – Silver, Elly Friesen – Gold and Ethan Baril – Silver.

At the Fairview meet on June 9, nine members of the Sharks were joined by Trevor Labrie of the Mitsue Minnows. Labrie won silver aggregate for his age group and Ethan Baril won bronze for his. Elly Friesen won gold aggregate. Otherwise, Baril, Colby Cyr, Eleanor Friesen, Taylor Friesen, Jagger Green, Jorgia Green, Karl Koester, Soleil Pugliese, Dawson Taylor and Mia Vizcarra set 20 PBs in 40 swims.

On June 10 the ASG trials were held in GP. The top three swimmers in each category qualified, with the fourth-place finisher as alternate. Eleanor Friesen was the top girl over all in 13-year-old girl’s category. Taylor Friesen qualified as alternate for 15-year-old girls and Ethan Baril as alternate for 14-year-old boys.

Also attending were Alexis Wheeler, Karl Koester, and Colby Cyr.

“All six swimmers swam incredible races and should be proud of their results,” says Sharks’ head coach Jacquie Labrie. “All swimmers had to swim 100m back stroke, 50m breast stroke, 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle. Several of the Sharks were swimming strokes for the first time in a swim meet setting and they did very well.”

Also making the Zone 8 team was Ethan McLaren of Slave Lake, who swims for the High Prairie Dolphins club. He qualified in the 15-year-old boys category.
