The Animal Rescue Committee (ARC) of Slave Lake held its 21st annual Dog walk and run fundraiser on May 31, bringing together local residents and their dogs to support homeless animals in the region.
Participants completed a five-kilometre walk that started and ended at the animal shelter.
According to ARC, the annual event raises funds to help rescue, feed, and house homeless animals in the area.
“The turnout was good,” said participant Kristy Wakeling, who attended the event with her dog, Wilson.
The event was open to all community members, with a $5 participation fee and free admission for children five and under.
Participants and their dogs were provided with ARC bandanas, access to a water station along the route, and free waste bags, according to the ARC event poster.
The participants say that last year’s event was held in much hotter conditions.
They were also pleased the walk was completed before the rain began on Sunday.
The walk lasted about an hour.
After crossing the finish line, participants enjoyed a free barbecue prepared by volunteer Dianna Kent.
ARC member Vanessa Bjornson said the fundraiser raised a total of $5,336.
The event also recognized several young fundraisers for their efforts.
Camryn McIntyre earned first place after raising $1,036.
Lillian Dahlgren placed second with $1,000 raised, while Kali Bjornson finished third with $920.
“We really enjoyed it,” says participant Jen MacCormick, adding that her dog, Indy, was adopted through the Slave Lake animal rescue program.
ARC president Dennise McIntyre and Vanessa Bjornson thanked everyone who participated, donated, and supported the fundraiser.
They said community support continues to play an important role in helping the shelter care for animals in need throughout the year.
