Minor hockey report

The Slave Lake U18 Thunder beat Barrhead 8 – 2 on Sunday on home ice. Slave Lake goal-scorers were Nathan Hartman and Jethro Green with a pair apiece, Kolby Courtorielle, Kris Courtorielle, Paul Houle and Cole de Champlain. The Thunder were actually outshot, but Salah Baalbaki was solid, stopping 34 of 36.

The Thunder’s next game is Jan. 23 in Wabasca.

U18 Female
The U18 Female Thunder played two games on the weekend. They lost 5 – 2 to Fairview on Saturday and beat High Level 10 – 1 on Sunday. Both games were played in Slave Lake.

Tayla Warman and Emma Okemow scored the Slave Lake goals in Saturday’s game. Details from the second game were not available by press time.

This weekend is busy for the Thunder. They host High Prairie on Friday night, and on Saturday travel to High Level for two games.

The U15 Thunder lost 8 – 3 to Edson on Saturday, also getting out-shot 39 – 17. With just one win in 13 games this season, it’s looking as if they were mis-tiered at the outset of the season. But it’s probably too late to do anything about it now. And if, as they say, adversity makes you stronger, this team by now should be getting very tough indeed.

Playing in front of home fans on Saturday, the Thunder found themselves down 5 – 1 after two periods – although they had enjoyed a 1 – 0 lead in the first on a Carson Maitland goal. Koltin Davis and Hudsyn Pearson scored early in the third to give the home team a bit of life, but Edson finished it off with four straight.

This Saturday the Thunder host Fort McMurray in a double-header.

The U13#2 team hosted Wabasca on Saturday and won 8 – 3. Wabasca had the lead 1 – 0 after one period on a goal by Cole Hodgins, but Slave Lake found its range in the second, scoring four unanswered. Arnold Broadfoot, Chase Blanchette, Nolan Beaupre and Carter Donaldson got the goals.

Third period goals by Jordon Bjornson, Beaupre, Donaldson and Callum Lindsay iced it for the Thunder. Wabasca responded with goals by Quincey Alook and Hodgins.

On Sunday they beat Westlock 4 – 2, with two goals by Donaldson and singles by Broadfoot and Beaupre.
The U13 #3 team lost 10 – 2 to Whitecourt on Sunday.

Gerald Giroux and Chase Mountain scored the Slave Lake goals.

The U11 #1 Thunder won their Jan. 8 game against Whitecourt, 8 – 2. After a scoreless first period, Whitecourt opened the scoring in the second, and that seemed to open the floodgates.

Slave Lake got seven straight goals after the slow start – two by Dominic Baxter, two by Eric Martin and one each by Blaise Poitras, Drake Conrad and Wyatt Wentworth. Ethan Albert finished off the scoring for the Thunder.

On Sunday the same two teams battled to a 6 – 3 decision for Slave Lake.

Action from the U11 #1 game vs. Whitecourt on Saturday. The Thunder won the game 8 – 2.
