Sleeper reacts badly to being woken up

Leader staff

Taking a snooze in a public change room probably isn’t going to get you in much legal trouble. Fighting with the police when they wake you up? Another story.

On Feb. 8, Slave Lake RCMP responded to a call about a suspicious person sleeping inside the Multi Rec Center. Officers found a man sleeping on a locker room bench. The officers woke the suspect and advised him he was under arrest for a theft earlier in the day.

The male resisted arrest, assaulted the officers and attempted to disarm one of them of his Taser.

As a result, the Slave Lake man was charged with two counts of resisting arrest, two counts of assaulting peace officers and one count of attempting to disarm a peace officer. He also faces a charge of theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime. Following a bail hearing, he was remanded into custody. His first court appearance was Feb. 12; his second on Feb. 19.

The Slave Lake RCMP continues to investigate this matter including identifying the individual(s). Anyone with information to assist with the investigation, please contact the Slave Lake RCMP at 780-849-3999 or your local police detachment.
