Smith Fair and Rodeo returns for 46th year

The Smith Fair and Rodeo is preparing to celebrate its 46th anniversary on Labour Day weekend from Sept. 4 to 6, bringing together rodeo action, family entertainment, and community spirit.

The annual event kicks off Friday evening, Sept. 4, and continues through Sunday, Sept. 6, offering activities for all ages at the Smith Fairgrounds.

“It’s the 46th annual Fair and Rodeo on Labour Day weekend, as usual,” says Virginia Wasieczko, one of the event organizers. “It starts Friday evening and continues right until Sunday evening.”

According to Wasieczko, visitors can expect a full weekend of entertainment, including rodeo events, heavy horse pulls, mini chuckwagon races, a barrel racing jackpot, and a parade through the community on Saturday.

Families can also enjoy a petting zoo, bouncy castles, a mechanical bull, vendors and exhibits in the hall.

Wrestling has also been added to Sunday’s lineup.
This year’s parade theme, “Celebrating Smith-Hondo Spirit,” highlights the people and organizations that help shape the community.
Wasieczko says the theme is about bringing residents together while showcasing local businesses, organizations and community groups.

“It’s more showcasing our community,” she says. “Different businesses, different groups. It’s just to bring our community and area all together.”
Wasieczko has helped organize the fair and rodeo since 2004.

She says one of the most rewarding parts has been watching young competitors develop over the years.

“We have seen them start as mutton busters all the way to saddle bronc, bareback and bull riding,” she says.
“It’s the youth growing throughout the years and watching new youth keep coming year after year.”

While organizers are keeping the event’s familiar attractions this year, Wasieczko says there is always room for surprises.

“We’re kind of doing our usual items,” she says. “But we never know what will happen from now until then.”

As preparations continue, organizers are encouraging community members, businesses and organizations to take part in the parade. Those interested in entering can contact Sheila Willis for registration information.

Wasieczko also reminds visitors to come prepared for Alberta’s unpredictable weather, noting that the fair and rodeo will go ahead rain or shine.

“Be prepared for all the different weather that can happen within a day or two,” she says.

Looking ahead to the weekend, Wasieczko says she hopes to see another strong turnout from the community.

“We cannot thank our sponsors enough,” she says. “Everybody that supports us, we really appreciate it…. past, present and future.”

Entries for the rodeo will open later in August, with more details expected to be announced by organizers.
