Students at Smith School have been showcasing their creativity through a variety of art projects displayed throughout the school this year.

According to teacher Larissa Serson, students from preschool to Grade 9 regularly take part in art activities connected to seasonal themes, school events, and classroom learning.

“The students create art almost every day,” Serson says. “We want our students to be successful through this.”

Many of the students’ projects are currently displayed on the school’s walls and hallways.

Serson says preschool students recently created flower artwork using watercolours and bubbles as part of a spring-themed activity.

“The students blew bubbles to create them,” she said.
Kindergarten students also completed spring-themed artwork by folding coloured paper into the shape of bees.

Older students worked on projects connected to special events throughout the school year. Grades 3 and 4 students created artwork for Earth Day, while Grades 5 and 6 students drew self-portraits imagining what they might look like at 100-years-old.

“The Grades 5 and 6 students also included what they will do if they are 100-years-old,” Serson says.

Students also participated in activities recognizing St. Patrick’s Day by creating artwork that included their wishes and ideas of luck.

For the first day of school, many students decorated coloring pages featuring their names as a way to introduce themselves and personalize their classroom spaces.

Students from Kindergarten to Grade 9 also took part in a Pink Shirt Day activity by cutting pink construction paper into the shape of footprints. The footprints were then arranged into a pathway displayed throughout the school.

Serson says the art projects help encourage creativity and allow students to express themselves in different ways throughout the year.

Additional artwork continues to be displayed throughout Smith School as students complete new projects.

The Leader will follow up more this year with the Smith School’s upcoming arts.
