The St. Francis senior boys basketball team headed to the 2017 provincial basketball championship recently. This came after bringing home gold earlier this month at zones. This is the first time in over two-decades that a boys’ basketball team from a Slave Lake high school will be in a provincial tournament.
“The Falcons participated in the zone basketball tournament and winning this tournament is the only way to get to provincials,” says head coach Evan Mellsen. “The Falcons breezed through the first round defeating Gerard Redmond 91-52, but then things got interesting. Playing the home team (Breton Cougars) in round two proved to be interesting. The Falcons played the role of the ‘villains’ in a tightly contested affair that showed poise and power as they hit shots late to send the Cougars limping home with a 71-56 win.”
Mellsen adds, “The finals arrived against Holy Trinity Academy and the Falcons won out with a 13-2 late run to pull out of a 10-point deficit and gain the lead with three minutes left in the fourth quarter. The Falcons proved that they are the team to beat and are flying high as we head to provincials.”
