Things to do

Somebody has come up with a list of ‘The Top 10 Things To Do in the Slave Lake Region.’ That ‘Somebody’ being the Slave Lake Region Tourism Society.

The list starts with ‘The Lake & Beaches’ and ends with ‘Town Amenities.’ In between are Marten Mountain, golf, ATV/snowmobile trails, museums, hiking and biking, the Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation, camping and skiing.

If the idea is to lure more tourists to the region (it must be), it’s not a bad effort.

One thing notably absent from the list is events. They can draw people, but on the other hand, they tend to come and go. Pamphlets advertising former events are pretty useless or at least misleading. This has been precisely the case with pretty much every attempt to create a website to promote tourism. Almost before they appear there are out-of-date features, and in many cases, nobody willing to take the time or make the effort to keep them current.

This one has some staying power, but at the price of ignoring such events as Beach Fest, which we’re told is going to be even bigger and better in 2024.
