Town council off until August 12

Council notes – July 8, 2025 meeting

Joe McWilliams

Lakeside Leader

Council’s first meeting of July (also the last) started off with a public hearing on the Municipal Development Plan and the Land Use Bylaw. Five people turned out for the event (not counting the local newspaper reporter), but it went pretty quickly.

The open portion of the meeting wrapped up inside of an hour. Council then went into a closed session, the topic of discussion it did not reveal.

No meeting July 15
Due to a short bench (so to speak) and a light agenda, CAO Alex Pavcek proposed that council cancel its July 15 meeting. There were no objections and council made it so by way of a motion. Council’s next meeting will be on Aug. 12.

Question period: grind and fill?
Councillor Kimberly Hughes had the only question for the CAO: Are we doing grind and fill line painting by the 7-Eleven?

We are, said Alex Pavcek. From the tracks all the way down to 6th Avenue.

The grind and fill method of line painting is supposed to last a lot longer than the usual method.

State of the Lake: Daze, Crash and markets
Mayor Francesca Ward took the opportunity to congratulate the Chamber of Commerce for organizing a successful Riverboat Daze event. She also mentioned town staff, who she said did “a ton of behind the scenes work.”

Ward also spoke about council taking a month off, which is more or less traditional at this time of year.

“We’ll be back on August 12,” she said.

Ward’s last State of the Lake item was to remind people about the Crash for Cash demolition derby, happening on July 12 and 13.

“Get there early!” she advised.

Councillor Hughes put in a plug for farmers markets, which she said are returning to downtown Slave Lake, starting on July 26. They’ll be outside the Legion, she said. Other ones are scheduled for Aug. 7 and 23 – 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in all cases.
