Town throws a Canada Day party at the rec centre

Nobody counted the number of people that turned out for the Town of Slave Lake’s Canada Day event, at the Slave Lake Multi Rec Centre on July 1. But it’s probably fair to say the turnout – for the pancake breakfast at least – took the fire department’s volunteer griddle team a bit by surprise. They were very, very busy!

Fire Chief Mike Bissell says he doesn’t know how many pancakes or people they served.

“It was too busy to even think about that,” he says. “We did use about 30 boxes of pancake mix though.”

Kennedy Hartman, who headed up the organizing team, estimates 1,500 people through the four hours of the event.

Susan’s Kitchen handed out 1,200 ice creams, she says. “Everyone seemed to have a blast!”

Face-painting, bouncy castles and a dunk tank were part of the fun too.

The Fire Department pancake-production team was going flat out, with a line-up of maybe 100 hungry people.
Hudson Koester and Bowen MacDougall were smashing cuteness records at the MRC field house during the town’s Canada Day event on July 1.
After several previous attempts failed, this young hurler succeeds in dunking Aleese Statham, the first person to volunteer (or maybe to be ‘voluntold’). She’s the coordinator of the town’s Summer Splash program.
