In the spring of 2025, Katrina Torres, a Grade 11 student at Roland Michener Secondary School (RMSS), was selected to attend the University of Alberta Getaway at their Augustana Campus in Camrose, Alberta.

There were 500 applicants and Torres obtained her spot to attend through her academic interests, programs at the campus and thoughtful responses to essential questions, says a news release.

Students were selected from provinces all across Canada.

The goal was to bring together diverse group to show the post-secondary opportunities they have.

The weekend-long event consisted of campus tours, student panels, classroom experiences and being able to connect with peers and faculty, says the release.

Additionally, students explored the city of Camrose to get a sense of what university would be like there.

“Getting to experience the U of A campus firsthand and meet other students from all over Canada made everything feel real,” says Torres in the release.
