Labour Day weekend (Sept. 3 to 5) is the 41st annual Smith Hondo Fall Fair and Rodeo. Events include a parade, market, and two concerts.
There’s an option of activities on Friday – a supper, junior gymkhana, and concert.
Smith Legion will be having a roast beef and ham supper on September 3. Doors open at 5 p.m. The dinner is from 6 to 8 p.m. Kids five to 10 years old $10, everyone else $15 a plate or two adults for $25.
Also, starting at 6 p.m., there is a Junior Gymkhana hosted by the Mirror Landing 4-H Equine group and Smith-Hondo Association of Recreational and Agriculture Society (SHARA). Participants will compete in barrels, poles, and stakes. The registration deadline is Wednesday, September 1 by 8 p.m. This is in the outdoor equine arena.
After the supper, musician Gil Grand has a concert called One Night with Conway. The concert starts at 8 p.m. It is in the Ag-Rec Centre in Smith. Tickets are $40 in advance and $45 at the door. As the name implies, Grand is a Conway Twitty tribute artist.
The Saturday fun starts with a pancake breakfast. The event is put on by Char’s Railway Cafe and First Smith Scouts. The breakfast starts at 8 a.m. The Cubs and Troops are selling pancakes, eggs, and sausage for $5. The Beavers are selling lemonade and coffee for $1.
The pancake breakfast poster doesn’t have an end time, but the parade starts at 10:30 a.m.
Parade participants need to be ready for judging at 9:30 a.m. The parade theme is ‘Flying the Coop.’ The categories are club, business, individual, family, antique car, antique farm equipment, motorbike/quad.
On Saturday, there is a market in the afternoon. Vendors include beaders, knitters, a honey stand, wood carver, and the local history book. There is also a petting zoo and bouncy castles for the kids.
The rodeo is the afternoons of Saturday and Sunday. This includes a beer garden and food trucks.
The M.D. of Lesser Slave River ad on Page 11 says, “From the Junior Gymkhana and ‘Flying the Coop’ parade to the dance, calf scrambles, muttin’ bustin’, dozens of children’s activities and tons more, the Smith-Hondo Fall Fair and Rodeo has it all!
“You won’t want to miss a second of this edge-of-your-seat rodeo action, including: bareback, tie-down roping, team roping, saddle bronc, ladies’ cow riding, bull riding, junior steer riding, calf riding, pee wee barrels, junior barrels and ladies’ barrels!”
In the evening, the Richard Woodman Band has a rodeo dance. Alcohol will be available, so the dance is for people 18 plus.
