Vanderwell Lodge visitor restrictions and other health measures

Lesser Slave Lake Regional Housing Authority (LSLRHA) is following the recommendations of Alberta Health Services and taking precautions to continue to protect residents from the Coronavirus.

As of March 16, 2020, LSLRHA restricted access to Vanderwell Heritage Place (aka. the lodge) to essential visitors only, until further notice. Essential visitors are designated support persons. LSLRHA has cancelled all bus trips and volunteer activities.

The reason for the restricted access is that Alberta Health Services classifies older people and people with medical problems as more likely to have serious symptoms if they catch COVID-19. These include difficulty breathing and pneumonia. In severe cases, COVID-19 can cause death.

As of the March 18 report, there have been no deaths in Alberta.

In other, LSLRHA buildings such as family housing and seniors apartments. All meetings, conferences etc. are cancelled.

“Coronavirus (COVID-19) sounds scary,”says the LSLRHA release. “There are legitimate concerns about it spreading around the world, however we need to keep in mind that it is a contagious virus and we have a strong history of responding to contagious viruses and infections in our Lodges. From an operational perspective, we will respond to COVID-19 as we already do for things like influenza or other viruses.

“If there is an outbreak we are prepared to initiate established quarantine protocols to minimize the spread of this, or other diseases as needed. The LSLRHA is receiving, reviewing and disseminating daily updates from Alberta Health Services (AHS), and Health Canada, as they relate to information and best practices for protecting our clientele and responding to this situation as it develops.”

LSLRHA employees returning from outside Canada, or who have anyone in their residence or household returning from outside Canada, must self-isolate for 14 days after the return and notify their manager prior to returning to work.

In addition, all employees who are travelling must notify their manager of their travel plans prior to leaving.
