Vehicle torched in 5 St. NW driveway

Leader staff

Police are calling a fire ‘suspicious’ after a pickup truck burned in southwest Slave Lake in the early morning hours of May 28.

On May 28, 2024, at approximately 3:30 a.m., Slave Lake RCMP assisted the local fire department with a call of a vehicle on fire on 5th St. SW. Nobody was in the vehicle at the time, or in the van parked next to it, which also suffered fire damage.

A fire investigator was called in to assess the situation and pronounced it suspicious.

Slave Lake RCMP are looking for information on the event and the moments leading up to it. They are hoping anyone who was in the area of 5 St SW, between 6th Ave. and 1A Ave. between midnight and 3:30 a.m. on that night, and who saw or heard anything, will get in touch. Likewise anyone who has video footage of these areas.

Video of the fire – or purported to be of the fire – did appear on social media the next day. So did all sorts of speculation about why somebody might have lit the fire. Police are aware of the talk, Sgt. Ted Shillaker told The Leader last week, but aren’t able to comment on it.

Anyone who has information or footage regarding this incident is asked to please contact the Slave Lake RCMP at 780-849-3045, or your local police. If you wish to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at or by using the “P3 Tips” app available through the Apple App or Google Play store.
