Volume is down at the regional landfill and that hurts revenue. On the other hand, theft is a problem and it costs money.
These were two of the items reported by town councillor Brice Ferguson at the Jan. 12 Slave Lake town council meeting.
Recycling is problematic, Ferguson added, due to markets for the material drying up. A lot of stuff that is submitted for recycling ends up in the landfill, he said. Sorting is an issue as well. Whoever is buying material isn’t interested in stuff that isn’t clean.
Theft is another issue. “High-end” recyclables (electronics, for example) are being stolen. Usually fences are damaged in the process.
