What a year it’s been

This will be our final edition of the Lakeside Leader for 2020. Thanks for sticking with us for another year – one that has been unusual to say the least.

There are no guarantees in life or business, except for the proverbial death and taxes. A lot of small businesses have had a hard time of it in 2020. We’re sure hoping your local newspaper, for one, can tough it out and come out on the other side of this weirdness we’re going through. There are obviously other forces at work (besides a pandemic slowdown) in the economy that affect newspapers. But (as we’ve said before), there doesn’t seem to quite be a alternative to the local paper. Yet.

Having said all that. Merry Christmas! Happy New Year!

A friend of The Leader from Canmore confidently predicts COVID will be all wrapped up and out of our hair by the middle of 2021. We’ll be able to get together, travel, attend weddings and so on by June, he says.

Well, we’ll see about that. If the vaccine works, and most people actually take it, we should be able to get the upper hand, at least.

In the meantime, let’s do what we can to keep ourselves and our communities safe and healthy. There’s a way to get most jobs done without spreading germs. Let’s do that.

Let’s also see what the limits of our rural internet are, by doing video chats with the people we love and miss at Christmas. And yes, we realize lots of people in the community are not Christian; lots who aren’t also celebrate some sort of mid-winter festival. It’s all good as long as we are respecting and not hurting each other.

So again, let’s have a happy Christmas and see what we can do about making 2021 better than bad old 2020.
