Wilson Creek culvert project: contractor to start after July 15

Leader staff

People have been asking The Leader to find out what’s going on with the culvert replacement job at Wilson Creek on Hwy. 2 east of Slave Lake. We got the following from Khalid Manzar, an engineer with Alberta Transportation’s Fort McMurray Region.

Manzar says Alberta Transportation is “coordinating with the contractor to have the repairs completed as soon as possible to ensure drivers’ safety.

“The site was shut down for the winter,” Manzar continues.

“And work is now further delayed due to the Restricted Activity Period (RAP), which prohibits in-water work until July 15. The contractor is expected to mobilize immediately after the RAP period to complete the remaining work.”

The new culvert is in place, and has been for some time. The remaining work would seem to be about shoring up the embankment, so it doesn’t continue to slide into the gully.

In the meantime, slippage has been noted on the downstream, or north side of the highway embankment. Also a noticeable slump in the roadbed itself.
